Barrett Corporation operates Xplornet Communications Inc. ("Xplornet"), Canada's largest and fastest growing rural broadband service provider, with customers and dealers in every province and territory.
Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Xplornet aims to bridge the urban/rural digital divide by ensuring every Canadian, regardless of where they live, has access to broadband, thereby enabling them to compete effectively in the global economy and gain access to essential government and educational services. Their unique mix of fixed wireless and satellite technologies delivers high-speed internet services to homes, businesses, and enterprises, as well as providing static IP addresses, web hosting and long-distance services. Through Broadband Xcessories, Xplornet is also a leading distributor of consumer electronics including networking solutions, digital cables and mobile solutions for television and internet.
Xplornet will move aggressively to build Canada's first national fourth-generation broadband network. Xplornet will create a robust 4G broadband network covering all of rural Canada by combining a new 4G WiMAX network of roughly 1200 towers with a new satellite network using two new 4G satellites.
Viasat-1, North America's first 4G broadband satellite was launched on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan; a second similar 4G satellite is scheduled to launch in 2012. This network will provide all Canadians with the opportunity to receive fast and affordable broadband connections.
Werklund Capital Corporation's investment owns 8.9% of the common shares of Xplornet under a vote pooling agreement with its Founder, Bill Barrett.
