Calgary business icon and former Canadian Entrepreneur of the year David Werklund wants to inspire a new generation of leaders.
(Calgary, Alberta) September 29, 2011 – The Werklund Foundation's Empowering Minds leadership programs today celebrated a major milestone: the graduation of the 2,500th student from the life-changing Teen Leadership Breakthrough program. The milestone, announced during the Werklund Foundation's first annual fundraising gala, comes just five years after their student leadership programs were first introduced in Alberta.
The Werklund Foundation believes this can be done, and a $3-million gift to the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Education has created a partnership to develop and support research, teaching and community service activities focused on leadership training for teachers and for those they teach. The Werklund Foundation Centre for Youth Leadership Education will be a flagship in Canada in the research and development of programs and initiatives to engage youth of all ages through a variety of means and resources.
The Werklund Foundation’s $40,000 contribution will be specifically used to construct the new stage which will bear the name of the benefactor. The stage will be housed in the recently donated Burnside Performing Arts Centre, (former Bargain Shop!) which is currently being renovated and will become the 'Home of the Red Willow Players!' The Players' current building will also receive minor renovations and will be transformed into a stage/makeup/costume area.
